Beware criminals, for he is the LAUGT!!!
Typical kinda dystopian future stuff. It's the future, bad war and crap happened, Earth is a wasteland save for a few overpopulated Megacities with massive crime rates, police are replaced by Judges who act as judge, jury, and executioner there on the fly. And the film begins with Rob Schneider getting outta prison and acting like his classic 90s twerpy self. So he heads to his apartment but uh-oh, there's criminals wanting to participate in the block war (basically the whole city block are being assholes, throwing molotov cocktails at cars, killing anything that moves and they don't like, that sort of thing). Judges are on the scene but they need backup... So they call the main man himself: Judge Joseph Dredd...
Dredd kicks ass and mops the floor with their corpses (duh), some news reporter says Dredd is just as guilty as the crooks, and then we see in prison facility far far away the antagonist of the film breaking out of his maximum security and inpenetrable little piece of concrete Hell to get his hands on a Lawkeeper pistol and a robot that strangely reminds me of Arnold Scwarzenegger. Interesting this about the Lawkeeper, it's the sidearm of the Judges and ONLY a Judge can handle it or else it fries the one holding it. Rico (bad guy) picks it up with no problem. So after the BEST aftermath of someone driving like a jackass, Dredd is framed for the murder of that news reporter guy and sent via prison transport across the Cursed Earth to the penal facility... Where it never arrives, Schneider acts like a twerp, the transport shuttle gets shot down by Cursed Earth scavengers and we learn one of the Chief Judges that sentenced Dredd is in cohoots (Did I spell that correctly, or am I startin to be like Stahlloon, ahh crap...) with Rico. Leaving Dredd in the desert to fend off the Angel family gang...
Naturally Dredd escapes and he learns from Chief Judge Fargo, who retired his badge to save Dredd (and played by the awesome Max Von Sydow), that Rico's his brother and both are clones of Anderson to create perfect Judges... Good plan with that, you got the opposite thing going on with your non-favorite son there, Anderson! From there, they gotta re-enter the city, stop Rico who's turned on Chief Judge Gryphon and apparently has a sexy asian scientist companion doctor girlfriend now... Who doesn't do any doctor or scientist stuff soooooooo why is she here? Besides the fact she looks good, I mean... Anyways, they also gotta get the Lawmaster air-bike working as well, it's got more bugs than Windows 95...
And that's pretty much Judge Dredd. It's totally totally 90s, right down to the catfight between Judge Hershey (Diane Lane) and Rico's girlfriend (played by Joan Chen). The movie's got pretty senseless action, cheesy humor from Schneider, but you know... I love this film. Definitely my favorite comic book film but also quite possibly in my top 5 favorite movies list. No, it may not be spot on with the comics like that boring crap Marvel is doing just to tell a Avengers trilogy, but it's fun, got great actors, interesting universe and sci-fi criminal plot even if it's a little cheesy but c'mon, it's based on an IDW comic book series, not reality. I give Judge Dredd 4 out 5 passages from the Book of the Lur... I MEAN LAW!!! Check it out if you haven't already. | |
