If ya smelllllllllllalalalalalalalell... What the Hell Knight is cooking...

Let's face it, we've all heard of the Doom games and the majority of us have played the games... And a LOT of people have hated on this movie saying it's not the games, it doesn't have the same story, blah blah blah. But let's dive into the original Doom game's story: They experiment teleportation but oops, portals linked to Hell and demons come out and kill all but one guy who's strapped with guns, a chainsaw, ammo, and the berzerker powerup/drug that makes you throw up your rock fist and literally punch the forces of Hell into gory oblivion. Doom had fast paced shooting action and a badass heavy metal soundtrack... Not really the best synopsis for a horror movie that can be taken seriously, don't you think?

"Reaper! What the Hell did I just kill?!"
-Sarge
"Looks like a spike riddled pixellated gorilla... Is that instrumental Metallica it's listening to?"
-Reaper

So this movie, there's an ancient portal found in the desert here on Earth that is linked to Mars, where the Union Aerospace Corporation set up lab is doing advanced experimentation including weapons and some unethical science is going on, and here's monsters... Not demons but monsters. Don't wanna ruin anything but it's kinda like a Resident Evil thing mixed . So anyways, monsters are there and Marines are sent in to clean up the mess. Oneby one they die, one of the Marines is being forced to remember the horrors of his childhood. Blah blah blah, people die, dark corridors and sewers, monsters, first person shooter camera scene... Nuh-uh, I'm not kidding. I saw that scene in the theater and thought it was an action scene.

"Looks like you brought fireball-less claws to a gunfight, Imp!"
-Doomguy

Now, the big thing people throw a fit about is no demons, no Hell stuff but I point out: Demon stuff, sci-fi portals, gruesome horror, that was already done in movie form called Event Horizon. As for special effects, yeah they're not that good but this was 2005, where a LOT of special effects was bad CG and this wasn't the most big budget movie around that time. Although effects shouldn't make or break the movie, they did what they could and it's not bad. Now, it's not bright and colorful like Doom either, it's darker and full of pop up monsters kinda like an attempt to be like Aliens and it's not Aliens. The ironic thing is Id Software was inspired by Aliens and tried to emulate it in the original Doom... And it wasn't dark, not scary, not Aliens.

In closing, I give Doom 4 out of 5 pixel spike monsters (Imps... Because that's what Imps apparently look like). I just took the film as it was; a sci-fi monster movie with guns. Around this time, I saw a lot of stuff like Saw, Ring, Grudge coming out and this is a good monster film rather than a slasher or ghost film. Doom's not great but good. I will say was disappointed in the ending which was essentially a fist fight rather than a epic battle with the Cyberdemon or Spider Mastermind... Though maybe it could be like they are high on Berzerk powerups... I wonder if anyone ever thought of that...
