It isn't Mighty The Armadillo from Knuckles' Chaotix, this is a different Mighty...
I'll begin saying I loved some of the Mega Man games growing up. My family had Mega Man 4 for the NES and I later got Mega Man 2 for Game Boy. Eventually I got Mega Man 3 for NES and then Mega Man X for SNES and blah blah blah. I heard about Mighty No. 9 and how it was by the main guy behind Mega Man and was excited, not enough to join Kickstarter but enough to overly anticipate this game. There were delays, I was disappointed, most of the delays sounded like things not even to do with the main game so I was upset people can't simply focus on the game and wanted to work on the extras. I just wanted to be a roboboy destroying 8 more powerful robots, IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?! Well, when the release date came around I came across A LOT of negative reviews on Amazon (Though most of which being "other people had issues so I hate this game") and I was skeptical to buy Mighty No. 9 but I wound up doing that...
Now, one of the biggest things people complained about was "This is not what I was promised!" Well... This is the spiritual successor to Mega Man essentially designed by the guy who did Mega Man. Now to me, that tells me to expect challenging side scrolling levels, a simple blaster (though in Mega Man 4 you COULD charge your shots), with several different enemies and bosses. I feel this game this game delivers that. I think it feels very much like a classic 2D Mega Man designed with 3D graphics. Notice I do not say "top of the line" or "modern" 3D graphics or anything like that, as this game is meant for different systems with different hardware limitations. It is even meant to come out for 3DS and PS Vita and I'm sorry, there's a big difference between PS4's capabilites and 3DS's so work has to be done, I get this delay.
My biggest complaint actually comes from all the talking and text bubbles. One of the advantages of Mega Man (pre-X) is there's little talking in-game. Might No. 9 has so much talking I just wanna yell, "Lemme just play the damn game! It's not Skyrim!" But I dunno, a more complex game like Skyrim (or at least Mega Man Legends which is NOTHING like classic Mega Man) actually seems more like what players were expecting and what they were whining they didn't get. This game was priced for $30 on release, it's not gonna be something like a multi-billion dollar game with several dozen people working on it like Doom, Skyrim, or even (probably) Super Mario 3D World. Not much left to say just this: If you're expecting something grand that could contend with big budget 2016 releases like Doom and Uncharted 4 then DON'T get Mighty No. 9. If you want a game that's tough like they used to be, and want a little updated graphics, give Mighty No. 9 a chance, it's not the most dreaded game I've ever played but it IS tough so you'll have to really try if you're even gonna make it to one of the bosses... Unfortunately with me, I usually have a few minutes before having to run to work or do some kind of something, so I lack the time and patience to really get into it. But for a cross platform Mega Man kind of game that isn't exactly Mega Man (It's not really supposed to be 100%, it's called Mighty No. 9 after all) it's a good one for $30. I give Mighty No. 9 4 outta 5 deadbeat asshole robots that take life for granted and need to be destroyed... Just saying! | |
