Prepare yourself for a game movie like none other...
A lot of people hate this movie but why? Well, let's just Mario jump into this blast from the past and see if it's the God awful piece of Toad crud people think of it is. Starts out with a pixelated cartoon explaing the dinosaurs died from a meteor and what if some escaped to another dimension. More recently a woman drops off an egg to a church and the woman is killed in a cave in somehow brought on by the evil Koopa. The egg hatches and a baby girl is inside. THEN the movie fast forwards to the present and we have Daisy as an archeologist looking into the site where the meteor hit the Earth. A contruction/plumbing company is bullying the archeologist Daisy and as she calls her university for help, she is assisted by the plumbing Mario brothers played by Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. So Daisy gets kidnapped by Koopa's cousins because she's got a piece of the meteor and the Mario brothers go to the other dimension, ruled by the evil President Koopa, to save her...
Really don't wanna spoil anymore of the plot so moving onto other stuff. The settings are nicely made, special effects are pretty good for '93, acting's not bad. Yes, it's cheesy, not 100% like the game but seriously think about this; how in Bowser's castle (eh, if you play the games you'll know it's close enough to Hell) would they make a live action movie accurate to a game where italian plumbers jump on turtles and strange creatures known as goombas, to rescue a princess kidnapped by an evil monster like Anguirus from Godzilla as they grow double in size by eating mushrooms? Yeah, that sounds like something more like a cartoon, doesn't it?
No, it's not the best movie ever, it is pretty cheesy, and it is obviosuly aimed at younger audiences, but worst movie ever? Even worst video game movie? Nah, I don't believe that. And I think this is a good family film that brings originality to the game as well as bring good references to the game series as well. Does everything make sense? No, but look at the source game and tell me that's more logical than this. My only REAL complaint is that for most of the movie, Koopa is a person. Not a dinosaur, not a dino-man, just a person... An evil person that's evolved from dinosaurs, but still just looks like a person and it's not until the end for like 5-10 seconds, he looks like an epic big boss from a video game. But overall, if you're looking for a fun for you and you're kids, I suggest you at least give it a try. I give Super Mario Bros. 3 out 5 Ba-Bombs.
