To the batcave to use the batcomputer before driving the batmobile, Robin...
By now, pretty much everyone knows Batman is like one of the most iconic superheroes that is dark and edgy but this wan't always so. Although the comics were originally to meant to be like gritty noire detective stories, most people remembered the fun and cheesy Batman portrayed by Adam West in the 60s. He went surfing, always ran into famous people while climbing buildings in broad daylight, Robin always said "Holy" to any random bullshit like "Holy unbelievably convenient clue, Batman", his fight scenes had pop up words that read the sounds he made against the villains, it was really toned down from the atmosphere that Bob Kane originally meant for the characters. This movie did the opposite route and delivered batjustice.
So the movie begins not with an origin story but more seeing the Batman in action, giving Gotham City's criminals something to fear in the night as well as seeing the corruption of Gotham's boys in blue and mobsters lining their pockets. During a raid where one of the mobsters is betrayed, Batman drops one of the betrayed criminal into a vat of chemicals and we see how the ever iconic and equally loved, Joker, is created. The rest of the movie is mostly The Joker taking control over the mobs, threatening the city with batches of spoiled health and beauty products, the Batman sleuthing about finding the solution, and ultimately leading to a duel between the world's greatest detective (second only to Sherlock Holmes) and the clown prince of crime who (WARNING!!! WARNING!!! SPOILER ALERT, SPOLIER ALERT!) we wind up discovering was responsible for killing Bruce Wayne's parents, inspiring him to become the caped vigilante that is Batman!
Parts of the movie may seem cheesy or low budget by today's standards, but at the time this is pretty new to see a comic book character loved by lots of kids and families now on the big screen and have no issue shooting villains with his machine guns on the batmobile, blowing up the Joker's hangouts, dropping bad guys off roofs and driving them insane, and the effects looked pretty damn good. I like the overall atmosphere that was brought to the film, some parts like the mobsters and detectives seem retro with the mobsters whereas others like the citizens of Gotham and the regular cops on the beat seem pretty modern. Overall I think Batman really was the film that popularized films based on comics and showed to everyone comic books aren't just bright and colorful and for kids, they can be violent with characters psychologically scarred with deep personalities. The caped crusader's entry to big screen gets 5 out of 5 villains Hell bent on shooting down the bat. | |
