3 times the horror... Unless you played the NES game, than it's 3 times the confusion...
I've heard a lot of people say this is the worst Alien film of them all but I disagree. The movie begins with the ending of Aliens, with Ripley, Newt, and Hix, onboard the Sulaco on their way home in cryosleep. Well, a facehugger comes and you can tell it impregnates one of them. The ship crashes on a rundown prison planet with a handful of inmates and 2 guards. They take the only survivor in which is, of course, Ripley, and it is revealed this facility was owned by Weyland-Yutani and has long since been fully functional. Very few inmates even stick around and those who have find some sort of peace in their work and are trying to repent their sins by learning/developing their own form of Christianity. During the funeral we see a dog that belonged to one of the inmates is having the Xenomorph's bloody birth... But Ripley is very sick as well... Like, sniveling blood kinda sick. Shortly after, inmates are having gruesome deaths like falling into fans, heads exploding... Yeah, this Xenomorph is way more hungry than the other ones.
After doing her own little investigation and the guards not believing her story about the aliens, Ripley discovers she has a queen inside her and the company is coming to get her and the creature. So now she's working on a plan to kill the Xenomorph, kill herself, in limited time and with no weapons. Though just thinking of this bugs me, they point out it's a maximum security prison and there's no weapons yet Dillon, the prisoner closest to a leader, has a freakin' axe! That can be a weapon! What the Hell! Anyways, they work out a way to lure the Xeno into the old leadworks, cover it in hot lead, then hit the sprinklers which makes the creature explode, Ripley jumps into the furnace to kill the Xenomorph inside her, total closure to the story, tragic ending but fitting... Until Alien Resurrection comes along and says, "Screw it, we're bringing Ripley back! God forbid if she can put her soul at rest by offing herself, we're gonna torment some more!"
Now, I like this movie... I don't think it's the best in the series but feel it delivered a solid ending to the trilogy. The script had several re-writes and filming began with the full thing not written out, the deadline for the final cut was drastically short, I think the movie makers did a great job considering. I think it's hard for a lot of people because they heard so much of the original concepts as well as interesting re-writes and the final version had little to do with either, but I think this film really pulled it off... Not as interesting as the first movie, characters weren't as likeable as Alien or Aliens, very little suspense and the deaths can be kinda predicted on your first viewing, but complaining about effects? This is '92 so of course CG was still very experimental. But who can beat that scene with the alien running through the corridors on the walls and ceiling in first person view? But will say this more graphic and violent than the suspense of Alien and Aliens. But it's still pretty solid in my opinion, and gets 4 outta 5 inmates dying from a "dragon". | |
