One of the all time classics...
Pretty much everyone knows Alien nowadays, even if they haven't seen this movie chances are they've seen one of the sequels or games or even action figures. But what is it about Alien that lasts where others fall? Well, let's talk about it a bit. The story begins with the crew of what looks like a space city awaken from cryo sleep, turns out the're essentially cargo runners delivering all this ore from one planet and are on their way home. Think of them as truckers in spaaaaaaaaaaace... Anyway, they get an alien signal from an unknown planet and orders from home to check it out. So they do, and they find a strange ship with a dead giant alien guy in what appears to be the cockpit. But is he the alien, oh no... I'm getting there. One of the crew members discovers a cargo hold full of eggs and gets a little too close, the creature within jumps out and breaks through Cain's helmet! Which gives us the moral of the story: DON'T F*** WITH THINGS YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT!!!!
They get Cain back to the ship and they examine the creature, unable to ascertain anything short of it has acid for blood and they can't get the thing off him... Eventually it does of it's own accord and is found dead. Everyone's laughing and giggling and having dinner when Cain seems to have a seizure and another alien eats it's way outta his chest. From there it's hunt or be hunted as the thing which was once as small as a hand is now this 7-8 foot beast able to silently creep down chains and picking off the crew one by one. To make matters worse, the truckers in spaaaaaaaaace are at each other's throats, unsure who has the best idea to resolve this issue which ultimately leads to the destruction of the ship and only 1 survivor played by (at the time) cinematic newcover, Sigourney Weaver.
The film might feel slow and the special effects may seem corny, but surprisingly the movie has aged well. The movie apparently did not have a huge budget yet they did a great job with the resources they had. No, it's not the special effects breakthrough like Star Wars was back in '77, but Alien did a great job being suspenseful, actors all did a great job, and the story felt original and imaginative despite being another film where the characters are trapped in an enclosed space and doomed to die.
If you're into horror movies and have never given Alien a chance, I strongly suggest you do so. I give Alien 4 out of 5 dead crew members... It's not my personal favorite in the series but I think it's damn good fun at being what it is: An original monster movie that focuses more on story and suspense than gore and pointless sex scenes... There's actually none of the latter in this flick. | |
