Daaaaaaaamn, Scoob! Let's get back in the Mystery Machine!
Okay, so Shaggy never says "damn" in Scooby Doo and this is the first in a long series of famous horror games. So maybe that's a bad joke... But not NEARLY as bad as the opening cutscene in this game. Seriously, it makes the original Evil Dead look like a big budget movie with top notch acting compared to the live action actors acting in the opening cutscene! ... VERY cheesy. But this is the mid 90s and this is one of few games with live action actors that I've seen in a PlayStation game, so A for effort but a generous C- for execution.
So what is Resident Evil? Well, a lot of people would tell you it's a "survival horror" game but this is a vague description. After all, every horror game including Doom (PC) or even Friday The 13th (NES) you are SURVIVING HORROR. I consider RE to be more of an Adventure game where you explore a huge mansion, solving puzzles, figuring out where to go next while occasionally fighting zombies and mutants. People have criticized the controls of the classic Resident Evil games, I believe these controls actually add to the horror: You can't just mash buttons, you have to stop and think in this one, how to outmaneuver the monsters in tight hallways, remembering how much ammo is in your guns during a fight (No HUD), what items are worth carrying and which ones you can hold off on as you have a small inventory, etc etc.
Story goes like this; People are mysteriously attacked in the mountains outside Raccoon City, the police are sent to investigate, the Bravo Team's chopper crashes and Alpha look for survivors... None found. Alpha gets attacked by obscure monsters so they head for a nearby mansion. Inside they find monsters, random useful crap lying about, and notes revealing the experimentation of the T-Virus which reanimates the dead and can mutate people and animals into super monsters. Claire and Jill, two of the few survivors, must search for their wounded comrades and discover the keys and secrets to escape this brightly colored puzzle filled action adventure from 1996! | |
