What a mess...
So this is Alien 3 for the NES and is the 2nd worst Alien 3 game that I've played (Each one different). It begins with kickass music and a decent blend of horror and action which is hard to pull off on the old school NES. But things get annoying when you realize how complex the level design is with objects you'll never be able to reach and a time limit that seems like you'll beat ONLY if you know every layout for the levels. This is pretty average for these kind of games but it gets worse when you can't find the last guy to rescue. It's a pain.
The graphics are too bright and colorful to be a scary environment, there's never enough time, and the Aliens seem like they're always just outside your view! This said, those last 2 help make a game a game scary as you're always panicking because of the time, trying to find that last prisoner but whoa! Now there's a Xenomorph leaping at you to tear your face off! This game has little to do with the movie though save for the level environments and the fact Ripley is supposed to have a Xenomorph inside her. What would've made this game creepy as Hell is if weapons and ammo were scarce, still unlike the movie but this time you'd have no way to fight back the Aliens...
A few of the game's redeeming qualities are the awesome boss battles and the totally awesome kickass 8-bit music. But it's difficult to see the horror as the little bit NES could provide with it's hardware and not see it merely as annoyances that feel terribly overlooked... I still hate the time limit to level size ration... Very bad. Alien 3 gets 2 out 5 Xenomorph chestbursters. | |
