Proof that sequels aren't nearly as good as the original...
Let's jump into this already, spoilers and all: Game starts good, Snake is back and is a part of an anti-Metal Gear group with survivor from previous game, Otacon, and he's infiltrating an oil tanker ran by Marines disguised as civilians. Why? Because the Marines didn't learn nothing from previous incidents involving Metal Gear and they decided "Hey, you know that super badass weapon terrorists keep getting their hands on? Why don't we, I dunno, build one?" So Snake goes in to prove to the world it's existance and what do you know, terrorists attack and take control of the ship. So far so good, but it turns out one of the bad guys from MGS is back with a new arm which turns out used to belong to Liquid Snake... Who's mind, voice, will, and aggressive drive live on in this arm... I'm not saying nothing to that... Metal Gear gets stolen and it appears as though Snake went down with the ship. 2 years later we see Raiden in his dark blue sneaking suit infiltrating the bright orangish yellow oil cleanup facility Big Shell in broad daylight... Um, how does wearing the OPPOSITE COLOR of the place be a good idea for a sneaking mission?! As his bitching goes on and his girlfriend whines every couple of times you save the game, Raiden discovers the terrorist bosses are a woman that can't be shot, a bisexual immortal guy who think he's a vampire, and a fat bomberman...
The plot? I dunno, it's REALLY hard to follow this time around. Seems as though the new Metal Gear is basically a giant submarine with weaker mass produced Metal Gear Rays (The one the Marines designed) that may or may not actually have nuclear weapons (They say yes, then they say President needs to be alive, then he dies, then they say it's got ANOTHER one, then they say bullshit, they can't make up their minds), but it turns out Arsenal Gear is meant to control and filter information fed to the country... Because apparently censoring information is so much more dreadful than destroying the world with unstoppable nuclear weapoons. Arsenal Gear was built by the Navy, the AI was programmed by Otacon's sister, and was meant to be for the country's true rulers; a faceless and nameless organization called The Patriots... Which we discover at the very end of the game died over a hundred years ago. Otacon's sister is killed by Vamp, the boss you fight twice only to show up alive (and ugly but well) in Metal Gear Solid 4... I can't say for ALL the gamers but I feel a bit like Austin Powers everytime I see that asshole...
The actual gameplay is awesome but all the plot twists and shit, it's just too much. If you skip it all, you can beat the game within 6 hours as the majority of the game is freezing bombs in each building when you're not hearing people talk about something new and random... Storyline just feels as though Hideo Kojima could not make up his damn mind who the bad guys really are, what the threat really is, etc etc, Otacon gets shit on again with reuniting with his sister for a few minutes before they kill her... And I really liked her character but noooooooooo, Hideo probably felt very little in the game actually seemed threatening so she HAD to get killed... At least in Metal Gear Solid there's multiple endings where Meryl lives or dies (depending on the torture room) but not here, no matter what, Raiden fails to save her and Snake stands by and does nothing... That is until she actually gets stabbed and falls, then he runs in believing she can be saved.... Douche move, Hideo Kojima.
It's hard for me to give a good review. Gameplay is great but story is confusing, game is WAY short and feels so, and there's so many plot twists they seem to crash into one another. Until the bad guys make up their minds and reside their own squabbles, they don't need me to stop their plans as they're tearing themselves apart. Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty gets 1 out of 5 unplausible threats. Hell, there's even 5 (Technically 5 and a half if you include Strut L) buildings in the Big Shell you don't even get to explore, they just exist to make your map seem like the place is bigger than it is. | |
