A reboot of a classic, but how well does it hold up?
In the PS2 and Xbox versions there's a prequel episode taking place in Egypt with BJ Blazkowicz and British brother in arms, Agent One, hot on the trail of some Nazis digging up mummies and occult stuff. Welllllll... The bad guys get away and head for Castle Wolfenstein in Germany, naturally the Allied soldiers steal a plane to follow only to be shot down and captured. This is where the PC game starts: Agent One is dead on a lab table and BJ Blazkowicz is leaving a dead Nazi in his cell as he escapes armed only with a knife and a Luger. He leaves Castle Wolfenstein behind him, enters the nearby village to learn the Nazis have ANOTHER digsite in a nearby cemetary and the SS Paranormal Division must be stopped unearthing... Whatever it is they are unearthing...
Turns out the Nazis are trying to bring back this long dead dark knight guy named Heninrich the first to fight for their side in the war but luckily BJ Blazkowicz is on the scene to fight Nazis, hordes of the undead, steal top secret guns and rocket planes, destroy cyberntic soldiers that can't be controlled that well designed by their maker, Wilhelm Strasse AKA Deathshead (He's in the sequel games), before finally returning to Castle Wolfenstein to fight Heinrich I who supposably cannot be destroyed.
Turns out he can be destroyed by lots and lots of bullets in this game of fast paced WWII action. Storyline is a little hokey but (kinda like Hellboy and Captain America) has a bit of a "I suppose it's plausible" feel to it. It's not identical to the classic Wolf3d but does a damn good job resurrecting the old game into the video game standards of the early 2000s. The final boss is a little bit of a letdown, music can become repetitive and annoying, but the rest of the game is great! I give RTCW 4 out of 5 resurrected mummy knight guys. Oh, but beware of the cute Nazi girls in catsuits, they'll mess you up FAST... Now I wonder why the final boss couldn't be more like that... An undead all powerful sexy dressed asskickingly fast warrior priestess girl... Thing... | |
