Before Doom, there was this World War II FPS masterpiece...

First of all, I must apologize for being bias, this game was my all time childhood favorite! I've played it since 4 years old, been making mods of it since I was 13 or 14 years old! It is the game that inspired me to be the creative person I am today. Although Doom was more of a FPS revolution due to it's popularity, I believe Wolf3D is the true beginning of that game revolution... So I'll TRY to give the game a fair review rating.

The game stars William Joseph (Or BJ for short) Blazkowicz; US Army soldier in World War II, captured and taken to Nazi occupied Castle Wolfenstein for execution. But BJ has other plans... He kills a guard, takes his weapons, and attempts to escape from Castle Wolfenstein.

This is merely the first part of the story that spans over 6 episodes, with 9 levels (Plus 1 secret level) per episode. Episode 2 involves another location in which a mad scientist named Dr. Schabbs is creating undead Mutant soldiers for the Nazis. During Episode 3, you travel to the heart of Germany and kill the incarnation of evil protected in a suit of armor and armed with 4 chainguns, Adolf Hitler. Now that's a boss battle even modern FPS games refuse to pull off!

See? No bullshit. I admit, the armor and weapons is a bit crazy but that is a pretty awesome boss battle regardless of lack of realism. Besides, just look at those graphics! It's a realistic point of view but I believe the game developers were specifically going for a simple run 'n' gun kind of fun action game.

That being said, the gameplay is EXTREMELY straight forward. Just go here, kill that, move on, repeat. Unlike most FPS games seen nowadays in which you follow a single path to beat a level, this game offers some very well designed levels that make you explore to find the exit. Some levels are actually quite maze-like. Furthermore, there are secret pushwalls to new areas which are best found running along a wall and holding down the spacebar.

I mentioned the first 3 of 6 episodes. The other 3 are a prequel story that tell of a chemical weapons attack and BJ's job is to find the attack plans and kill the General behind the assault.

Now Wolfenstein 3D doesn't have that great of a story, I admit. But what it lacks in storytelling the game makes up for with it's addictive action packed gameplay. It's the kind of game that really doesn't even need a story, you can just turn it on and enjoy shooting things. Graphics are dated but were awesome for '92. Wolf3D gets 5 out of 5 war medals.

Oh, and they did make various versions of the game for iPhone, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Macintosh, Atari Jaguar, Xbox 360 and PS3... But I prefer the classic PC version as the others seem to have annoying changes made to the game. ESPECIALLY the Super Nintendo version!
