A very simple yet fun port of a attack helicopter simulator game from my childhood...

Don't get this confused with the PC simulator game called Gunship which was made by the same company back in 1986 and also starring the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter...

Not that I'm trash talking Gunship (PC). Back in 1986 those graphics were awesome, but wouldn't you expect something better for the Playstation? In fact, Gunship (PSX) is actually a port of Gunship 2000, ANOTHER PC game made by the exact same people and is pretty much the sequel to Gunship (PC)...

As you can easily see, Gunship 2000 (Which was the version I used to play a lot back when I was a kid) has far superior graphics and usage of color as Gunship (PC). But what about Gunship 2000's Playstation port, Gunship (PSX)?
Hell yeah the graphics are an improvement! But really, Gunship 2000 was made back in 1991 and Gunship (PSX) was made in 1996, so of course there would be graphical improvements. Consider yourself learned in the evolution of the Gunship series... Regardless of the confusion with the titles, I think they should've just kept the Playstation port titled Gunship 2000.

So what is Gunship (PSX)'s gameplay like? Is the story decent you wonder? Well, um... There actually is no story. The gameplay is you, flying an attack helicopter (Or squadron of choppers, depending on your rank), the helicopter(s) and it's/their armament is chosen by YOU prior to each mission, you fly to a destination and meet your objectives before flying back to your base and landing. Your objectives can vary, from picking up/dropping off troops from the hold of a UH-60 Blackhawk to seeking and destroying a mess load of enemies. In addition to being a port of Gunship 2000 which only offers these simple mission types, Gunship (PSX) also offers a fast arcade mode in which you destroy as many enemies as possible while cranking up your score points.

The controls can be a bit tricky at times, you gotta hold SELECT and press other buttons like L2, R2, SQUARE, CIRCLE to do things like pull up the GPS map or even turn on/off your rotor blades. However, this can be considered a great improvement over Gunship 2000 as you have a keyboard lined with keys... Some do things, others do not...

"Okay... What do I press to get me off the ground... Whoops, just blew up my own base... That's my bad. Well I guess it's not THAT key!" - Me

Seeing as though Gunship 2000 was a favorite game of mine since back when I was a little kid, it's a bit difficult to give an accurate rating. The gameplay is simple and fun, where you can just turn it on and play, but also very repetitive and may leave the more typical gamer wanting more. I say... 3 out of 5 attack helicopters armed to the teeth with Hellfire missiles?
