A classic returns, WAYYYYYYYYY more hardcore than before...

Let's jump knee deep in this. First of all, the story has been retold as though the previous two games didn't happen... Which is probably better than good as the 1st game didn't get enough into the story. This game takes place on Mars, scientists are working on long distance teleporting, but their experiments have brought nightmares and a glimpse into a bizarre dimension. Out of obsession, the lead scientist is determined to explore this unknown realm. Eventually, the portals are fixed so the dimension can be explored... But unfortunately, that was the key for the legions of Hell to break loose and possess a large portion of the marines stationed on Mars.

Unlike the classic Doom, Doom 3 focuses WAY more on horror and suspense to provide an ultimate scare-fest instead of running around while shooting anything that moves. With a title like "Doom", horror and scary should be expected more than fast paced action. All the monsters from Doom make an even more horrifying appearance in Doom 3 as well as some new beasties including slow moving moaning zombies. Sometimes skinny, sometimes headless, sometimes fat, and sometimes armed with chainsaws...

The levels are just as beautifully designed as the graphics, the dimension of Hell is built creatively and plays out wildly, the events of the story play out as nicely as high quality horror film, the only real disappointment in the game is the ending of the game. Don't get me wrong, the return of the Cyberdemon is awesome...

But you don't fight him like a traditional boss battle. Instead of going toe to toe in an epic gunfight against a deadly monster, you fight hordes of Imps and other demons, collecting their souls in a powerful artifact known as the Soul Cube as you dodge rockets fired by the Cyberdemon. Only a few attacks with the Soul Cube is enough to bring the giant down. Awwww... Damn it! Big bosses deserve big battles! Like they say, the bigger the badder!

Despite the ending deserving a more climatic finish, the game is overall awesome. I say it deserves a 5 out of 5 trips to Hell rating.
