From the creators of Wolfenstein 3D comes... Shhhhhh!... Wait for it!!!...
Dun dun DUUUNNNN!!!... What? Too much? For those unknown to the game, Doom is about a lone marine on the moons of Mars (Phobos and Deimos), and is trapped inside laboratory facilities where scientists were experimenting with transport portal technology... Least that's what I understood... I dunno, they don't get into the story that much save for demons are coming through the portals, killing and possessing everyone, and you're the only survivor! It's up to you to travel between facilities and escape... Or kill them all... Whatever, not much story remember? You do wind up going to Hell though, that's the 3rd and final episode in the game entitled "Inferno".
Much like Wolfenstein 3D, the gameplay is focused on run 'n' gun action fun. Unlike Wolfenstein, the game engine is much more advanced: You can carry more guns some with their own ammo types, multiple death animations, actual lighting to the levels (Some rooms actually flicker like classic horror movies), body armor, levels aren't flat environments but have multiple layers accessible from stairs and elevators. It's easy to see why Doom was much more of a game revolution than Wolf3D. In truth, I hadn't played this game until I was 12 or 13 as demonic entertainment wasn't allowed in the Christian household... That all changed as soon as my father bought demonic movies like End of Days, The Minion, Devil's Advocate, and then he abandoned our family. Ironic, as it was his rule "NO DEMONIC ENTERTAINMENT!" Moving on...
Possibly the coolest level of the game is battling the Cyberdemon, big boss of episode 2. That guy slings rocket after rocket at you like there's no tomorrow as somewhat creepy music plays in the background. The music of the game is awesome but varies from headbanging metal to creepy ambient music, both are nice but often changes the game from action to horror to action to horror. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, WILL YOU?!?!
All in all, the gameplay is good if you're into the action demon horror thing. I think it deserves 4 out of 5 demon corpses.
