A bit like a Norse comic book version of Stargate... As a heads up, this movie isn't 100% true to Viking mythology. The comic series by Marvel took an ancient religion of brave warriors and turned it into science and people from other planets and totally made the Viking heaven of Asgaard into a techno city of gold and shit. Okay, Let's get started with the review... Story begins with Thor getting pissy as some Frost Giants from Jotunheim break into Asgaard's armory. Thor and friends go battle crazy in Jotunheim, slaying dozens of Frost Giants before Odin shows up and drags them back to Asgaard and strips Thor of his power and banishes him to Earth... Where he's hit by a van filled with scientists. One of which being Natalie Portman who I feel acts too damn juvenile and way too cutesy. Why oh why couldn't they've gotten Keira Knightley? I like her so much better, despite her role in The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies. She was also in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as the Queen with lots of a makeup and an attitude that says "Yeah, I don't screw around with my politics, assholes!"... Which is probably why I like her.
I didn't consider the action and special effects to be all that awesome, but they're okay. Like most comic book movies nowadays, there's a little too much romance comedy like stupid Mary Jane and Peter Parker in Spider-Man (I prefer ones more like The Punisher with Tom Jane or Batman starring Michael Keaton). And for some reason, there's several scenes where the camera angles are crooked... Looks like people fell asleep on the job and used the cameras as pillows. Sadly, the best parts of the movie are the beginning battle scene in Jotunheim and the final fight scene in the end. Frankly, I'm disappointed at turning Viking religion into a sci-fi story involving aliens from other worlds and pathetic Men in Black ripoffs, but the movie is still somewhat entertaining... Therefor I give Thor 3 lightning strikes out of 5. Borderline average. My suggestions for a good Viking movie; The Vikings (Kurt Douglas), Beowulf (Ray Winstone), and The 13th Warrior (Antonio Banderas). | |
