Console ports vs. PC crashes vs. Cash in pocket

Posted by madwolf555 on September 24, 2016 at 3:35 PM Comments comments (0)

Seeing console ports of games isn't anything new, I remember back in the 90s when Doom was advertised in Sega Visions and Nintendo Power magazines and just like the arguments of Sega vs. Nintendo and PlayStation vs. Xbox, we get the PC vs. console guys that 9/10 times say the PC version is better.

Yeah... Normally I do PC stuff just for mod content however lately I've been having really big trouble getting things working on my PC. For starters, games I bought off Steam: They used to work a few months back, now crash. Most of the time I don't get nothing like Clive Barker's Jericho, but every now and again with games like Realms of Ancient War and I get the error code 0xc000007b (which no one bothers helping with on the Steam forums and on the Internet you just get usually tech support BS, "reinstall game. install this, that, this, this, that, and this." Followed by no reply when that crap doesn't work. Lately I've been trying to get some old games running on my PC (Omikron, Throne of Darkness, and Slave Zero) and can you guess what? They don't even start up! So it looks like I'll either have to rebuy games through a digital service like Steam (although hopefully one that fixes bugs and makes sure games WORK... like GoG) or buying the so called watered down console ports. Furthermore, my Windows 10 laptop doesn't seem to be able to play ANYTHING that utilizes Quake III's engine! No Alice, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, Jedi Outcast, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Nope, they all crash at the startup!

Now, not all ports are all THAT bad. Doom on SNES is okay, love the PlayStation version's music, Oni on PS2 has better controls (plus you don't have to download stuff just to get it to work), PlayStation Diablo and PS2 Quake 3 aren't too bad, N64 Command & Conquer, Quake II, and StarCraft are more than decent, Skyrim misses all the fan made content but it's STILL epically Skyrim... But what upsets me is when games don't even bother working on PC. All the purists will tell you "download this" or "you're not doing it right" but why can't we just go back to insert the damn disk, start it up, "hey it works!" I realize software piracy is a big thing but when you buy a game and you have to fidget with it or have to buy an older machine just to get it working? It makes the personal computer not a personal computer and more like a slave to corporate bill counting overlords. Especially when certain games like Vampire: The Masquerade and Throne of Darkness DON'T HAVE console ports, so it's like you HAVE to have an older Windows PC that crashes a lot to play several games.

I was really really looking forward to trying Slave Zero and Omikron for the first time on my last day off work before having to jump back into it but it looks like I now have to buy the Dreamcast versions which I've been told from various sources they are inferior to the PC versions... THEY ACTUALLY STARTUP DON'T THEY?!  But oh wait, now I don't have money thanks to bills and lack of supporters on Patreon. So I'm gonna have to wait a couple weeks before I can afford anything. As for PC gaming... Crashing sucks, and don't even get me started on the so-called graphic options in Crysis 2. I just wanna play a good game, but now I wanna...

No MORE wasting time and downloading countless megs of patches and DLLs just to play a game!

Mods and art

Tonight after work I'm gonna try and get some more work done on Krucible'sfinal boss sprites. Aside from the final boss, there's really not much needing work, just testing to see if everything plays out smoothly. Really hoping to get this done soon (possible release by the 1st). The nuclear nightmares coming! Hehehehe...

My other update is a digital painting that I'm shooting to get down. That also doesn't have much left to do, could be done these next couple of days as it mostly just needs some shading and touchups. Here is a link to my drawn and simple B&W version if you wanna check that out.

Also, be sure to check out my Patreon page. Any donations will go to show some love and support for my work, whether it's videos, art, mods, whatever. Plus you get nifty little perks too like full length videos, digital painting processes. So please go and check it out. :)

As you guys may or may not know (mentioned this on Facebook, DeviantArt, Tumblr, and YouTube) I have a Patreon account. It started as a "If you support me and my work (reviews, mods, art, anyway) than feel free to contribute... I have one backer and she's an awesome artist that goes by MadeleineInk.

However, lately I've noticed less and less views on my YouTube page. I had some ideas and heard some feedback, and now I've some new ideas for pledges and such...

So here's what people are getting for $2USD a month...
1: Access to full episodes of Arktik Vixen and Mad Wolf Time To Play videos. (Edited/cutdown versions will be free to watch on YouTube).
2: Gonna work more on my artwork videos showing my drawing and digital painting processes.

For $12USD you can hire me to draw an image of your choice! Feel free to message me on Patreon about what I draw and don't draw...

For $36USD you get a drawing but in digitial painting form as well. Once again, message me about what'd you like and what I won't do...

And that's pretty much it! Check out the Patreon page if you feel like helping this Mad Wolf out...

Dreamcasts and New Handgun

Topic #1: Sega Dreamcasts

Did you own one of these back in the day? I swear, I did not know ANYBODY who owned one of these babies when they were out and who could blame us? A lot of people had PlayStations or N64s and the games being released didn't seem much better than was being offered for the competition systems. We didn't really see anything phenomenal (Short of Sonic Adventure 1 & 2) coming for this system. Personally, I remember Seaman and Space Channel 5 getting advertised alot and ha ha... No, they looked terrible just like the overly simply spiral logo.

But recently I was doing a little digging and discovered a whole sleaugh of games that the DC offered that seemed to get overlooked such as Quake III Arena, Unreal Tournament, Carrier, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Dead or Alive 2, more, and if these were advertised more than Seaman (God, I can't take that the least bit seriously. How did they think a smart mouth gigapet that mates disgustingly and thows poo at you would be appealing?!) maybe the Dreamcast would've survived longer than it's 3 year lifespan.

But even as I speak, it turns out small time developers are making great arcade games such as Sturmwind and Neo XYX and releasing them for retail prices for the dead console... Now, I know $60 is a LOT for a system that died back 2001 but these are not multinational companies but just a small groups of people making something action packed, challenging, yet fun. I recommend you guys YouTube "Lord Karnage Neo XYX" or "Sturmwind" to see what I'm talking about. I'm impressed and wished the companies made stuff like this back during the days of Sega vs. Nintendo.

Topic #2: Our new handgun

The Beretta 92FS,civilian version of the M9 from what I understand. My fiance, Nicole (AKA ArktikVixen) had me pick it up today (We bought it a while back but had to wait for the background check and paperwork, that jazz) and although I haven't fired this particular one yet (Raining lately and already sick to do much outside), we'll try to get some vid shooting this one before year's end. I will try and get some sprites made for game modders out there though, maybe this weekend? ;)

I have fired the M9 before when I was in Navy boot camp. It was a very similar handgun, light, and easy to shoot. Yeah so... Not sure if gun shooting is your thing, just throwing in my 2 cents... Take my ranting for what it's worth: Just 2 cents. :D lol

Games that need to make a comeback

Posted by madwolf555 on January 24, 2014 at 10:00 PM Comments comments (0)

These past 10-15 games, companies have been remaking/continuing classic games for modern systems such as Rise of The Triad, Shadow Warrior, Splatterhouse. Well here is my list of some games begging for for a comebcak from the almost forgotten past...

Back in the 80s and early 90s, it was pretty cool to have games/cartoons/comics with anthropomorphic creatures like Ninja Turtles and Blue Hedgehogs, toads were no exception! The gameplay of Battletoads was much like most arace games, levels were linear roads shown from a side scrolling perspective, some levels had you descending tunnels, throwing boulders at giant robots from the ROBOT'S perspective. The character's limbs would  become supersized when they ended their combos with super powerful punches and kicks. Rare WAS bought out by Microsoft and they already are redoing Killer Instinct so I think Battletoads NEEDS a comeback as well. And the lead enemy was this somewhat dominatrix looking chick called the Dark Queen... That was rare to see as an enemy back in the day...

Schyeah... SHE'S the final bad guy and she's hard as Hell to beat. :o

Road Rash is a motorcycle racing/fighting game in which the player rides motorcycles through busy streets, illegally arcing against other bikers and being chased by the law. If you don't wanna race clean then fight dirty throwing punches and kicks towards your competition, just be warned they WILL fight back with clubs and chains and other weapons! The last game in the series was Road Rash: Jailbreak for the Sony Playstation which, although fun, didn't compare to the simple awesomeness of the original games on Sega Genesis. With how many Need For Speed games they made, it really wouldn't kill Electronic Arts to bring Road Rash back from the past...

This game was Sega's idea to do something like Double Dragon (Which I hear was redone and released on PSN and Xbox Live, but from what I've seen doesn't look as awesome and looks more like a joke now). It was a pretty fun beat em up game and it looks like Sega wanted a Streets of Rage 4 and 5... But they hired Core to make the games and Core wanted to release the games for Playstation and Nintendo 64 as well as Sega Saturn, so Sega said "You're not making OUR games for our COMPETITION'S systems." (Which I believe was a fair thing to say). So Core decided to keep making the games but call them Fighting Force... Which ultimately wasn't as fun as the classics on Genesis. I believe though this game could be fun if brought back from the dead with gameplay like Dante's Inferno or God of War (Linear level design, but with 3d graphics and ability to move characters wherever in the area).

This game was made not long after Wolfenstein 3D and uses a heavily modified Wolf3d source code for a base. The game is about a futuristic James Bond like agent named Blake Stone who is going after a maniacal doctor using aliens, mutations, and killer robots as his army and plans to take over the universe. Only 2 games were made in the Blake Stone series and a reboot is BEGGING to be done.

One of the very few FPS games for the Sega Genesis. Zero Tolerance is about a space station getting attacked by alien forces wanting to take over the Earth. The Zero Tolerance squad is sent in for one objective: Kill them all. You get your choice of playable characters each with their own specialties, one gets more health from medkits, another makes their radar battery last longer, another is more accurate with firearms, etc. Totally an underrated game which deserves to be brought back and seen for it's glory.

There you have it: 5 games which I feel should be not just remade for new systems with HD graphics, but developers should step in and think of the games' great points and how they can add to it as they did with the Tomb Raider reboot. :)

StarCraft on Windows 7!!!

Posted by madwolf555 on November 21, 2013 at 5:40 PM Comments comments (1)

StarCraft... The classic strategy game loved by many. Windows 7... The OS that fixes a lot of the incompatible crap from Windows Vista and really made the PC personal again. Unfortunately some classic Win95/98 games still won't work right on it and StarCraft is one that the developers say "Unsupported on newer Windows, it will NOT work right." The game itself works but the color scheme just looks like garbage... But I had discovered 2 ways to fix this issue and call Blizzard on their BS...

This method I discovered on and is a bit easier to do, but you have to remember to do this EVERYTIME you start the game which can get annoying just to bypass a mess up with the color scheme... But it does work and IS very simple...

1: Right-click on your desktop and open Screen Resolution. LEAVE THIS OPEN...

2: Run StarCraft...

This one is a little more complicated and is something I found out for Age of Empires II (As it has the SAME color  issue) at Don't worry, I will explain things STEP-BY STEP.

1: Patch Starcraft to version 1.16.1, you can find download links with Google :) (Not sure if this patch is NEEDED, but will allow you to play without the CD )...

2: Open Notepad (Can be found in START Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories) and type or copy and paste the following...

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe

Start explorer.exe

3: Save as SC.BAT in the folder/directory you installed StarCraft. (Default installation is something like C:\Program Files\StarCraft\ )...

4: Right-click on the .BAT file you had just created and Copy. Right-click on your desktop and Paste Shortcut...

5: Run the shortcut, StarCraft will start...

I have NOT tested this with multiple computers or on Windows 8 but this works perfectly on my systemand feel this game fix should at least be looked into a little more often...

Good ideas for Wolf3d mods...

Posted by madwolf555 on July 10, 2013 at 12:05 AM Comments comments (0)

Hi everybody!!! :)

These are just some ideas I though would be cool for Wolf3d mods. Maybe you'll spot where most of my inspiration comes from. ;)

Ahh Aliens, video games based on this movie have often been made but rarely captures the intensity of the movie (Aliens Vs. Predator for the PC/PS3/Xbox 360 being one of the exceptions. With minor coding work and some artistic skill on the wall textures, the atmosphere of the movie could be captured well in Wolf3d's corridor/room based levels. Hell, you could even program in rescuable prisoners, some of which rigged to have their chests burst and spawn new enemies!

Eraser, an action film from the mid 90s about a woman working for a weapons company who discoverers a huge conspiracy of treason and arms trafficking. Schwarzenegger being the no-bullshit Witness Security agent he is, shoots up armies of bad guys, a plane, a crocodile, some more bad guys, to keep the girl safe. Okay... That's your typical classic action video game storyline... How the Hell is it NOBODY made this into a game?!?! Someone should... All I'm saying. :P

Splatterhouse, we barely know thee... No seriously, since the first game shown up in the late 80s for arcade, only 4 official games were really made. First being for TurboGrafx (Which I never heard of growing up in the 90s), the the 2 sequels for the Sega Genesis (Which I don't recall ever seeing in magazines, sure it was in some just not ones I read), and finally a reboot of the game in 2010 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (Which pisses me off it's not for PC!!!) . After playing the first 3 games with emulators and roms, the gameplay is go here, kill this, save your girlfriend while looking like Jason in a true B movie-like storyline... The story may suck, but that's where mod developers come in!!! Really, make the story however you want but with Wolf3D's engine, some code features like blood splatters, weapon bobbing, fatalities, I KNOW there's modders out there that've done real good creepy Wolf3d mods (Majik Monkee, I'm talking about you), this would be a pretty kickass mod. :D

Die Hard!... Yeah, this is actually a game I wanted to do before and even announced... Then the hard drive with all my files died. Still a good idea: 40 floors of action, maybe could have levels where you outrun some explosives or something. Story could be search floor to floor looking for that funny douchebag from Robin Hood, Harry Potter, and Galaxy Quest that kidnapped your wife and holding her and her co-workers hostage in a building he rigged to blow up... Why? Because he really wants the money from the vault. :P

Anyways, those are the ideas on the top of my head. Really I could go off all night talking about "Oh! This would be good! And this! Oh Hell yeah, that'd also be good!" But then I wouldn't have any time to do anything else... So I'm heading out, until next time.

Mad Wolf is back!!!

Yeah... I know I'm terrible with this whole disappearing and reappearing act I do... But I got some AWESOME news...

After the release of Tara Carmichael I had begun work on my latest project...

Which of course is nowhere close to any significant progress made. Why, you ask? Frankly it's because working on Tara Carmichael stressed me out, as much as I like how it turned out I still heard nitpicks on crap I thought was minor and petty. Even the most annoying bug in the game, no one bothered to mention to me... So I was a little angry about that.

Plus, been taking care of this dog my sister brought home which the dog IS sweet but also gets wild, her barks are very yappy and wakes people up, haven't been able to leave the house much as she barks and howls which wakes up my sister's baby. So yeah, I like the dog but she gets on my nerves at times, like when she pees and craps in the house when my mom leaves the back door always open. Although my sister brought Daisy home, guess who she imprinted on... Yep, me.

Oh and to make things even better, my PS3 died on me again a like 2 weeks ago. Instead of paying $150 to send it to Sony who'd replace mine with another refurbished piece of crap (I know as that's what they did the last 5 times, 3 times within the 90 day warranty) I decided to sell my PS3 games, replace some with the PC versions, get a Blu-Ray player, and the rest of my income would go to my credit card.

So yeah, as of late I've been playing a lot of Skyrim and Mass Effect on my PC, trying to chill out and not be so stressed or pissed off. Speaking of Skyrim, here is a screenshot I took of my character using some mods...

Isn't she the prettiest Dark Elf Viking character you ever saw? :)

Imagine this small picture at 1600x900 resolution with a crystal sharp picture... Yeah, my computer plays Skyrim THAT well (Minus some crap I don't like such as motion blur and video filtering :P lol ). And yes, I did make 2 Skyrim plugins of my own, been meaning to upload them to the net but haven't got around to it... Yet.

Also, whenever I do finally chill out, I'm gonna add some reviews for all 3 Mass Effect games. So stay freakin' tuned! :D lol

More news of Tara Carmichael!!!

Posted by madwolf555 on October 26, 2012 at 6:40 PM Comments comments (0)

Wow... Been a while since my last update... So here we go!

Tara Carmichael is looking amazing! Thanks to ThunderEnema for coding a 2nd ammo, I added a Shotgun and the M4s use their own ammo from here on (I was able to take a peak at the code, see the changes he made to the M4s, and used that to add the new Shotgun).

Furthermore, I was able to remember how to get 64 (Presently I got 9 unused slots) wall textures in the game... Though I might need more in which case I'll have to hit up ThunderEnema for more help.

Coding wise I was able to make the strippers say "Woohoo!" and do a little animation. They are also now killable which takes away points from the player.

As far as levels, I'm working on levels 12 (Hospital), 13 (Hospital/Bars/Street), 18 (Subway), and 19 (Subway).

And you may wonder what new changes I might add to the game... Wellllllllll...

*Exploding barrels which can contain weapons, ammo, or nothing. :D
*Still need to create uzi chick sprites for an enemy type.
*Gonna create another stripper... Or two. :P
*Vending machines and hot dog stands will require 500 points to get some food and drink.
*And of course I still have to design a good 15-17 levels... Yay. :(

That's it for now. I'll be back when I have more to say.

Latest projects...

Posted by madwolf555 on September 6, 2012 at 9:40 PM Comments comments (0)

So I just finished uploading The Pit, Viking Mead Hall, and Mad Wolf's Lever Action Shotgun, but what's next you may ask... Well...

*My new computer is AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOME!!! It can't play the latest games at top quailty but it does play Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Gears Of War, and Crysis 2 at high (but not highEST) quality. I intend to get Skyrim and Batman: Arkham City GOTY once the prices go down on them and after I make some more payments on the PC.

*Progress on  Tara Carmichael's been okay... Nothing really that great but okay. Will have to upload some new screenshots sometime. :P

*I intend to make a somewhat comical video for a Batman Wolf3D mod made by Team Raycast.

*Had recently finished making a trailer for J. Nicholas Lewis's (AKA ThunderEnema) Beyond The Grave, that was straining as files would get deleted, resolution would to too low, that sort of thing. You can see the trailer at...

*Gotta take some new photos... Got a new haircut a few days ago and I think it's a pretty awesome cut. :)

*On the 20th I will be going to Hawai'i for a MUCH needed 5 days of rest and relaxation... However I AM going with my mother so arguments and fights can QUITE POSSIBLY happen. Shooting going to a nightclub, seeing a new state, all that stuff will prevent me from being my usual douchebag self though. :D lol

And then I gotta get back into writing my book and finding a steady job. Busy busy busy lil' Mad Wolf.
